Understanding Wellness

Wellness

There are seven components to the wellness: emotional, mental, physical, social, spiritual, vocational and environmental. All of these components constantly require some energy, but many people lack balance among all areas. That is, most of their energy is tied-up in one or two areas such as emotional and social. Neglecting the other four or five areas causes problems throughout the system. It can be compared to trying to maximize gas mileage. You can devote a lot of time and energy to keeping your car tuned up and the oil changed, but if your tires are under-inflated and you are carrying a 50-pound bag of dog food in the trunk constantly, you are not going to reap the full benefits. The same thing is true for your body. If you are trying to maximize the use of the energy you have, you must attend to all aspects of your life, not just the ones that obviously need attention. Think about the last time you were stressed out. Most of your energy was going to the emotional component of wellness and the other areas such as social, physical and environmental started having problems. You neglected your relationships or tended to be more irritable. You probably got sick easier and had difficulty sleeping and there was just no energy left over to clean. Look over the following areas and identify imbalances and ways to correct them.

Components of the Wellness Model

The emotional aspect of the person involves any energy expended in the course of experiencing feelings.

The mental aspect is defined as those processes that receive, encode and disperse information. Their personality, their self-concept, and their mental abilities including creativity and problem solving shape people’s mental component.

The physical aspect of the person encompasses all of the physical/physiological processes that demand energy. These include neuroprocesses, digestion, respiration, immunity, exercise etceteras.

The social component of people includes all of the activities involved in forming and maintaining relationships with friends, family and coworkers. Examples are: communication skills and forming and maintaining nurturing relationships

The spiritual component is the energy dedicated to defining and living a purposeful life characterized by recognition of the connection to others and the universe and engaging in behaviors that promote balance and harmony with oneself and the universe. Most religions are based on principles similar to spiritual wellness, but spirituality is a way of /ife, not just a set of doctrines. People may choose to define their spirituality according to the doctrines of one or more religions, but it is not until they embody the intention of the doctrines and actually live by them that they will be spiritual. Spiritual wellness involves defining and living by a set of values and ethics with reflection upon their consequences for the greater good, and behaving in ways consistent with those values.

The vocational aspect is the energy dedicated to defining and reaching career goals. This includes: deciding on a career path, defining vocational needs and goals including:geographic location, benefits, opportunities for advancement and the environment within which one will work.

The environmental aspect is the energy dedicated to maintaining a positive, productive, relaxing environment for all of your senses.

Consider ways that people can multi-task in order to attend to all areas of themselves while accomplishing an energy intensive task such as moving or spring-cleaning which inevitably takes time and energy. Emotionally, it can be very draining, or people can take a little more time and look at some of the “treasures” they uncover in the very back of the closet. Environmentally, people can also attend to their surroundings to make them less dis-stressful. If people thrive on order, do not just throw everything into the middle of the floor and try to re-organize. Label the boxes. Plan a strategy for re-organization before starting. Finally, consider setting a relaxing mood with aromatherapy and music. Mentally, there is little effort needed if there is a plan-of-attack. People should figure out ahead of time how to move the piano down three flights of stairs so they are not stymied when the movers arrive. Physically, they should make sure they have enough rest, energy and good food–not just M&Ms and Mountain Dew. Also, use good form, bend at the knees, get help lifting overly heavy objects etceteras. Socially, make it a cleaning/moving party, get help, someone to talk to (someone to rub your back when you get tired). Vocationally, for people who move/clean on the weekend, plan on being sore on Monday. They will discover muscles they never knew they had. People’s allergies might also act up. Monday probably will not be very productive. Plan on either having an easy day, or taking the day completely off :-}

Think about ways you can help yourself go with the flow instead of swimming upstream. More suggestions can be found at Doctor-Is-In the sister site of the Counselor’s Community or Counselor Continuing Education and Self-Help Manuals .

How Back Pain Starts

When considering back pain we must concern ourselves with its variants. For instance, back pain can start with slip disks, which in medical terms is called Herniated nucleus pulposa.(HNP) Doctors define slip disks as ruptures of the intervertebral disk. The intervertebral rests between the vertebrae (Spinal Column) of the backbone.

The interruption has variants, including the Lumbrosacral,(L4 and L5) as well as cervical C5-7. The cervical is at the neck and belongs to other parts of the back and neck as well. When doctors consider slip disks they often look through etiology, which includes neck and back strains, trauma, congenital/inborn bone malformation, heavy lifting, degenerated disks, and/or weakness of ligaments.

After carefully considering, etiology doctors consider Pathophysiology, which includes protrusions of the nucleus pulposus. The center connects to the column or spinal canal and perhaps compressing the spinal cord or the nerve core, or roots, which causes back pain. If the spinal cord is compressed restraining the roots and cord often back pain, numbness, and the motor functions may fail.

The assessments in medical terms are based on Lumbrosacral, which may include acute or chronic pain at the lower back. The pain may spread out to the buttocks and move toward the legs. The person may feel weakness, as well as numbness. In addition, such pain can cause tingling around the legs and foot. The final assessment may include ambulation, which emerges from pain.

The cervical is considered. The symptoms experts look for is neck rigidity, deadness, weakness, and tingling of the hands. If the neck pain spreads the pain down to the arms and continue to the hands, experts will consider slip disks. Yet other symptoms may occur, such as weakness that affects the farthest points, or the higher boundaries of the body. The lumbar curves is at the lower back region and is situated in the loins or the smaller area of the back, which doctors consider also, especially if the patient has difficult straightening this area with the curvature of the spine (scoliosis) and away from the area influenced.

When doctors consider back pain, they will review the diagnostics after conducting a series of tests. Diagnostics may arise from tendon reflex, x-rays, EMG, myelograms, CSF, and/or Lasque signs. CSF helps the doctor to analyze the increases in protein while EMG assists experts in viewing the involvement of the spinal nerves. X-rays are used to help experts see the narrow disk space. Tendon reflexes are tested, which the doctors use tests to look deep into the depressed region, or the absent upper boundary reflexes, or in medical lingo the Achilles’ reactions or reflex. Myelograms assist the expert in seeing if the spinal cord is compressed. The tests start if the Lasque signs show positive results behind etiology findings, Pathophysiology, assessments, and so on.

How doctors manage slip disks:

Doctors prescribe management in medical schemes to isolate or relieve back pain. The management schemes may include diet whereas the calories are set according to the patient’s metabolic demands. The doctor may increase fiber intake, as well as force fluids. Additional treatment or management may include hot pads, moisture, etc, as well as hot compressions. Doctors often recommend pain meds as well, such as those with NAID. The pain meds include Motrin, Naproxen, Dolobid, or Diflunisal, Indocin, ibuprofen, and so on. Additional meds may include muscle Relaxers, such as Flexeril and Valiums. The common Relaxers are diazepam and cyclobenzaprine hydrochloride, which diazepam is valiums and the other Flexeril. Orthopedic mechanisms are also prescribed to reduce back pain, which include cervical collars and back braces.

Dealing With Different Types Of Back Pain During Pregnancy

For every woman, pregnancy is a beautiful time period. Giving birth to a new life opens up a new chapter in her life. She feels complete and that makes her life even more meaningful to her. A woman feels so much elated with this new experience that she is able to overcome all the pain and changes happening to her body.

Well, these changes could be positive as well as negative. And it is duty of every person connected with the expecting mother to make her pregnancy period most comfortable. The most common discomfort she goes through is that of pain in her back. In some women, the pain is a constant feature during the whole length of pregnancy, while in others the pain can be impulsive. The intensity of back pain also varies in all women. For the acute sufferers, the pain is usually unbearable.

As the fetus starts to grow in the mother’s womb, the over-all weight of the woman’s body increases. As the weight increases, it gets an uneven distribution around the abdomen carrying the womb. This is a known fact that it is your back bone that supports your whole body weight. With this increasing weight, extra pressure is put on the back bone. And it becomes a little difficult for the back bone to bear it. All these developments, at last lead to back pain.

Besides this, the abdominal muscles of a pregnant woman also get stretched. This affects the muscles present around the spinal cord. As the centre of gravity of a woman changes, the muscles around the abdominal area try to keep a proper balance. In doing so, they work extra load. This leads to muscle fatigue in the back.

The back pains talked about in the above paragraphs are the ones that a woman suffers in length during her pregnancy. But there is another type of pain, which is usually encountered when a woman nears her due date. The pain in the back is very intense at this point of time.

But, there is nothing to panic about. You can always deal with back pain during pregnancy. There is something very easy that you can start with. All you need to do is to consult a good gynecologist who will guide you through a pleasant pregnancy. More the number of doctors you consult, the more confused you will get. So the best advice remains to follow the recommendations of a single doctor, because all doctors have different theories about effectively combating back pain during pregnancy.

Most of the doctors will prescribe you the use of the belly belt that will effectively support your increasing weight. Besides this, following a good set of exercise is the best treatment to cure back pain during pregnancy. The exercises to be followed should ideally be of low intensity. These exercises work in the direction of strengthening your back muscles. Any good doctor will generally advice you to refrain from binging into medicines, as the chemicals present in them can prove to be harmful for your growing fetus.

So, follow the advice of your doctor and have a comfortable pregnancy.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome In Musicians

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is caused by compression of the median nerve that passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. Along with the diagnosis of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome comes considerable pain and impairment along with numbness, paresthesia (pins and needles) and loss of hand strength, coordination, and pincer grasp. This impairment is problematic for almost any profession; however, it can be entirely disabling for musicians.

The most widely diagnosed nerve entrapment disorder, carpal tunnel syndrome, is characterized by pain, swelling, numbness, and tingling in the hand and wrist. The disorder stems from excessive stress and strain placed on the arm, wrist, and hand that result from repetitive and/or static (non-moving) flexion of the fingers and wrist. This unidirectional strain causes a muscle imbalance in the hand and forearm, resulting in the stronger, shorter flexor muscles that close the hand to compress the underlying median nerve within the carpal tunnel, which is central to hand, and wrist movement.

The median nerve actually begins in the neck and travels through the shoulder joint through the Brachial Plexus down to the elbow and eventually to the carpal tunnel joint in the wrist. With repetitive unidirectional motions / activities being performed on a regular basis, the imbalanced muscles in the hand and forearm can cause the carpal bones that form the carpal tunnel to become misaligned, creating pressure and pain in the wrist as the bones compress the median nerve within. Critically, it is not only carpal tunnel syndrome that can result from an existing muscle imbalance in the hand and arm, but also other repetitive strain injuries that involve the ulnar and radial nerves at the wrist or elbow junctions. Thus, effective treatment must address muscle length and strength imbalances that may be present in the entire upper extremity region.

For musicians, carpal tunnel syndrome can be akin to a death sentence. Incapacitated through the hand and forearm, musicians may have to modify practice and performance routines. It is impossible to play the piano, strum the guitar, or manipulate the bow of a cello without superb dexterity and responsiveness in the fingers and wrist. Rest is often the first-line recommendation for treating carpal tunnel syndrome, but it is an option that few professionals can afford to take.

Thankfully, there are effective treatments that can protect against the development of carpal tunnel syndrome in musicians and that can curb the impact of symptoms as soon as they emerge. Strategically designed exercises that target specific muscles and groups of muscles in the hand and forearm have been shown to reduce symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome with ninety percent effectiveness.

If anyone recommends gripping, squeezing, pinching or finger-walking exercises, run the other direction, as these are the exercises / movements that musicians perform too much of in the first place and are the muscles that are already overused on a daily basis. Musicians need to strengthen the opposite muscles that they overuse. It is that simple. Keeping muscle groups with 25% strength of each other will reduce muscle and joint imbalance, reducing the possibility of musicians becoming afflicted with carpal tunnel syndrome or other finger, hand, wrist, elbow or shoulder injuries. Balance is the key.

It is important to consult with a physician or healthcare professional before beginning any type of exercises program for the treatment of injuries.

Simple Steps to Lower Back Pain Relief

If, like me you suffer from lower back pain, relief will be the first and foremost thing on your mind.

In the early stages of lower back pain, relief can often achieved by performing some simple stretching exercises or having a gentle massage. Alternatively you could try using ice and heat packs, these will help reduce inflammation, and reduce muscle spasms.

If you are frequently experiencing lower back pain, relief can be achieved in several ways, the main two being through either an anti- inflammatory or through special and targeted back pain exercises.

Anti-inflammatory drugs such as Ibuprofen can be purchased easily over the counter at your local pharmacy, or your medical practitioner may prescribe something stronger.

Taking prescribed medication over long periods of time is not highly recommended, solution to lower back pain as some of these drugs may be addictive, or carry side effects.

There are some excellent natural products available which are geared towards lower back pain relief and some are extremely effective. Any natural product should be your preferred choice of pain killer or anti-inflammatory over prescription drugs, however you should be aware that any anti-inflammatory or pain killing products are not a cure for lower back pain; they are just giving you relief from pain.

In order to eliminate back pain and prevent future occurrences you should look at introducing a regular lower back strengthening program and some non impact aerobic exercises into your weekly schedule.

The best aerobic exercises for fast and effective lower back pain relief are achieved either by using a stationary bicycle, or by swimming. The gentle motions from both of these exercises will get the blood flowing through your muscles, increase flexibility in your lower back and will release endorphins into your blood stream – the body’s natural pain killer. Performing either of these exercises for around 20 – 30 minutes daily will have you feeling a lot better, not to mention the overall benefits to your health,

Many sufferers and experts alike agree that for long term lower back pain relief and prevention you should practice some specialist and targeted lower back pain exercises.

By strengthening and toning the muscles in your lower back, upper legs and abdomen you will give support to your spine, and the surrounding muscles. The benefit that these lower back pain exercises have will be immense. You will not only notice that you no longer suffer from lower back pain, but you will also be a lot more flexible and will find it easier to achieve many daily tasks, that were sometimes difficult or tiring.

A good lower back pain relief and exercise program will likely be available at your local health centre or gym. Your medical practitioner will also be able to offer some information on the correct exercises you should perform for optimal lower back pain relief.

You will also find further details of some online lower back pain exercise programs on our website the details of which can be found below.

In summary lower back pain relief can be achieved quickly and easily by following a these few simple steps. Firstly achieve relief with a good natural anti-inflammatory. Next start a simple aerobic exercise program, and finally introduce some targeted lower back pain strengthening exercises and stretches into your weekly schedule.

These simple steps will ensure that you will rid yourself of back pain in the shortest possible time, and will greatly reduce the chances of any re-occurrence.

What Is Wellness?

Well, there are many ways that you can try to describe the concept of “Wellness” but some of the most widely used and the once that most people agree on are the following:

? Absence of “dis-ease”
? Feeling of well-being associated with a healthy environment
? Feeling of well-being despite unhealthy environment
? Ability to fulfill life’s demands and work towards a higher purpose
? A purposeful life that ensures joy, love, health and longevity

Who can be well?

? Can a person who lost his feet in a war be a picture of wellness?

No, although s/he is mentally and spiritually fit but not physically. There are exceptions where physically unfit person might be more active and successful in life like Craig Hutto who lost his right leg in a shark attack in 2005. A stand-out high-school baseball and basketball player, he has vowed to get back in the game.

? Is a person who repeatedly gets ear infections a picture of wellness?

No, the immune system in some human being is not fully developed and cannot tackle infections and they fall in this category of unwell persons.

? Can a person who had a difficult childhood be a picture of wellness?

Yes or No. Yes, if the person overcomes fully the trauma of difficulty in his/her childhood and does all physical and mental exercises as normal human being. No, if s/he continues to have some sort of physical or mental stress.

? Is a person who is obese a picture of wellness?

No, a person who is obese can not be termed as a picture of wellness. Obese person can develop serious health problems such as diabetes and heart disease. Preventing and treating obesity is difficult. Causes of obesity differ from person to person and are still not fully scientifically understood. They include genetics, environment and behavior.

Thus precisely a fit or well person can be termed as one who is intellectually, emotionally, spiritually, physically, socially and occupationally sound.

Wellness is becoming more and more of a common term but it was not always like that. No more than 10-15 years ago nobody could care less about wellness. Sure we had problems but if we just closed our eyes they might disappear. But they didn’t and that is why the is one of the major trends of the future.

General Advice on Personal Injury Claims & Compensation

Any injury that you suffer on your person, due to any factor or in any circumstance is called a personal injury. It could something small like a flesh wound – a cut or a bruise, or it could be something serious – like a fracture. It could be internal or external. At times the injury could largely be mental or emotional – like post traumatic stress. If you had to suffer the injury without any fault of your own, you are entitled by law to demand compensation for it.

This provision is made by law in almost all countries that recognize man’s right to safety. In UK too you can claim compensation for any undue suffering you had to go through by making a personal injury claim. Personal Injury is a specific branch of law and a large number of injuries caused by different causes and in different conditions, due to faults of different types of people come under it. Depending on the specific of the injury, different laws come into place, and compensation is also different.

The law seeks to provide compensation to the victim as a means of providing financial reimbursement for the expenses he had to take on while undergoing treatment and also to make up for any other financial losses he may have had to suffer. Compensation for this is awarded in the form of special damages. These are calculated based on accounts of what the victim had to spend. Along with this, the law also seeks to provide compensation to make up for the physical pain, emotional and mental anguish that the victim has had to go through. These are difficult to calculate and differ from case to case. These are called general damages.

Because there are so many personal injury types recognized by law, and injuries belonging to the same “type” can also vary greatly; the amount of total compensation received can be very different in each case. Also, legal procedures can get quite complicated for lay people to understand. Thus, it is usually best to hire a solicitor to handle your case and help you get as much compensation as required. Personal injury solicitors are highly experienced in claiming compensation and understand the intricacies involved. There are also specialized solicitors who deal with specific types of injury claims that can get complicated if handled without expertise. In the UK lawyers will also work on a no win no fee basis, if they think your case is really good. The no win no fee agreement is formally called the Conditional Fee Agreement and allows individuals to file claims without having to pay the lawyer’s fees.

Can A Chiropractor Relieve Your Menopause Symptoms?

Anxiety isn’t the only menopause symptom. Menopause can also cause a slew of other emotional and physical symptoms including back pain and discomfort. The good news is that menopausal women who suffer from back problems are finding relief through chiropractic medicine.

What is chiropractic medicine? It is a treatment that assists in restoring balance, healing and energy throughout the body. When our bodies lack balance, the hormonal and stress response system are affected. Thus, chiropractic medicine works by alleviating pressure on the nerve roots of the spine, helping to relieve discomfort. It detects dislocation (subluxation) and promotes correction by encouraging the function, repair, coordination and communication of the nervous system. Chiropractic medicine is a non-invasive drug-free treatment that is performed by a chiropractor.

How is it performed? First of all, chiropractor treatment will vary for each patient, as different techniques may be used to help alleviate certain symptoms or health conditions. Therefore, a chiropractor will want to know the medical history of the patient and their current health problems. Once this information has been processed, treatment will then be provided.

Most chiropractors will use their hands to perform treatment; however, they may also use other treatment methods such as light, heat, ultrasound, electrotherapy and other special adjusting instruments. You will also likely be provided with information regarding a personalized exercise program, nutrition and lifestyle changes that can help improve your symptoms.

Is treatment painful? No. Most people find chiropractic medicine to be quite relaxing. What may be unnerving to some patients are popping sounds that joints make when they are adjusted. This popping noise is the sound that occurs when a gas bubble between the joints pop. It’s the same sound and feeling that happens when you crack your knuckles.

How can a chiropractor help during menopause? Chiropractic medicine can relieve a variety of painful and uncomfortable menopause symptoms related to estrogen deficiency including:
?Back pain
?Headaches and/or migraines
?Stress and tension
?Neck problems

Chiropractor treatment is also considered beneficial for treating the beginning stages of osteoporosis. It is incredibly effective at restoring flexibility to joints and decreasing muscular tension and pressure on nerves.

Chiropractic treatment can provide relief fast, which is often why it is one of the most celebrated alternative remedies. That being said, you will need more than one chiropractic treatment. The average patient has eight annual visits, but this number will vary depending on the health concern.

Are their any risk? It is extremely rare for complications to occur during chiropractic treatment, especially if performed by an experienced and qualified chiropractor. Therefore, it is a low risk, non invasive therapy that is virtually safe for everyone.

How do I find a chiropractor? Although you don’t need to be referred to a chiropractor by your doctor, it is a good idea to first consult your health care provider to find out if he/she has any recommendations. You should also speak to others who have had chiropractor treatment to learn about their experiences and ask them about their chiropractors.

You can find chiropractors to help treat your menopause symptoms by checking your local yellow pages, phoning your local hospital, or doing an online search with your city and “chiropractor” as the main keywords.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome In Grocery Clerks

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a very serious affliction suffered by approximately 3% of the U.S. population, or 9-million workers annually. While symptoms usually begin as a general ache or pain in the wrist and hand, carpal tunnel syndrome is a very serious disorder that can lead to severe dysfunction and possible nerve damage.

Those most at risk for carpal tunnel syndrome are those who have jobs that involve constant repetitive and/or static motion, particularly of the wrists, arms, and hands. While this might instantly bring office workers to mind, this problem stretches well past the basic cubicles of a call center or of a data entry center. Carpal tunnel syndrome actually afflicts more assembly line workers and grocers than computer workers. Grocery checkers are actually considered so highly at risk for carpal tunnel syndrome that even the federal government has singled them out as a group that needs support to combat this affliction.

Men are found to only be 1/3 as likely as women to have carpal tunnel syndrome. The most recognized reason for this is due to the fact that women incur muscle imbalances at a faster rate due to the musculature and their wrists are generally thinner, thus the carpal tunnel is smaller and so it is easier to damage the median nerve that runs through it. Work that requires repetitive flexing of the fingers or wrists will increase the chances of developing carpal tunnel syndrome. Static flexion involving gripping motions such as holding power tools, gripping a steering wheel or holding a pen will also cause the development of carpal tunnel syndrome. Bagging groceries and scanning all the various items, not to mention use of the register, is a major reason why grocery checkers are among the most highly afflicted group of workers.

Grocery checkers are so prone to carpal tunnel syndrome and similar injuries that OSHA has specifically singled them out as a prime example of workers who need special considerations in their work environment. The loss from workers compensation and lost time is enough that many employers have worked hard to introduce injury prevention programs. Many of these employers have reported happily that their efforts have had a positive effect on work-related injuries and workers’ compensation costs. While the following advice was designed specifically for grocery checkers and grocery stores, it is equally valid for fast food, gas station or convenience store clerks, or any workers in a high volume retail environment.

A report by NIOSH revealed that more than 50% of all food cashiers, (jobs predominantly held by women), suffered some degree of carpal tunnel syndrome and other forms of repetitive strain injuries as a result of the physical demands of scanning products at high speed.

Think ergonomics. What’s that? Well ergonomics is basically a process by which the tools and environment around a worker or specifically designed to help take pressure off the parts of the worker’s body that are going to experience the most stress and strain. This can apply to back, shoulders, neck, but it also very commonly is used in reference to wrists and wrist injuries, especially carpal tunnel syndrome. OSHA highly recommends that all employers in retail look for ergonomic solutions, and in general the employers that have gone that route have reported seeing a positive difference. One of the main reasons why the government and employers have taken so much interest, and why it so much focus has been put on carpal tunnel syndrome in grocery checkers, is because how vital a grocery store is to every single community, and because of the huge amount of employment that these stores create.

Grocery store work can be physically demanding. It is not at all uncommon for many grocery store workers, even in small towns, to handle thousands of items every day to stock shelves, check groceries, operate the register or prepare inventory. Out of all these actions, the four things to look out for when trying to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome are force, repetition, awkward positions, and static postures, all which contribute to the development of muscle imbalances, the main causative factor of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Trying to find a way to do the work that cuts down on these red flags, and the occurrence of work related injuries would decrease. It is in the employer’s best interest to pay attention when an employee gets an injury. There might be some people who don’t think carpal tunnel syndrome is a big deal–but they would be mistaken. If an employee has carpal tunnel syndrome, then how is he or she going to do a job that requires constant hand movement, wrist movement, or anything else along those lines?

Because of the way scanners are situated, and because of the job itself, there is always going to be the repetitive motions, the turning of the wrist to scan a bar code, all the little things that can cause severe carpal tunnel syndrome in workers who are keeping up a grocery store. Knowing that this is a problem, however, is the first step to dealing with it. Through ergonomics, special stretches and muscle balancing exercises, and implementing job rotation to prevent one person from doing too much of one job, carpal tunnel syndrome can be prevented, which is always better than waiting until an actual treatment is necessary.

Carpal Tunnel Ergonomics

The exploration of ways to help humans adapt to machines or an environment in such a way that won’t be stressful is known as workplace ergonomics. Many people have the notion that workplace ergonomics is only something to do with computers. Not exactly. Computers aren’t the sole focus. Ergonomics also explores the many different causes of pain related to the workplace environment.

The basic concepts behind carpal tunnel ergonomics are discussed here to give people a better idea of how they can be applied. They have been designed to boost energy levels and reduce the effects of the twinge and throb.

Just to be clear, the carpal tunnel is found in both the palm and wrist where the forearm and hand’s tendons and nerves pass. If this area becomes aggravated, it will begin to swell, applying pressure to the nerves, and causing pain. The majority of people suffer this kind of pain when they’ve slept a night in an awkward position or with bent wrists. It’s even sometimes enough to wake people up in mid-slumber because they feel the tingling sensation of pins and needles. Once they wake up, a lot of people simply ignore the pain, setting themselves up for permanent damage to their nerves.

If you want to avoid the increased pain that can result, take a look at these tips. They are simple hints that take into account carpal tunnel ergonomics. They’ll be a big help in improving your comfort level while working.

* Gel pads are available almost anywhere. Get these for the mouse and keyboard you’re using constantly at the office.

* Make sure you wrap padding around all vibrating tools. You can find it at most hardware stores for a few dollars.

* Position your chair in such a way that your wrists are extended over the keyboard straight. With the wrong posture, you can start to develop carpal tunnel syndrome eventually.

* It doesn’t matter if you’re trying to make a tight deadline: take breaks. If you’re so rushed that you can’t remember to do so, get a software program that will remind you with a pop-up on your screen. .

* You can use wrist braces to make sure your wrists stay straight and avoid bending or flexing. The effectiveness of splints and supports has been proven. You can get them at medical supply houses without a prescription from a doctor.

* Once in awhile, do a few wrist exercises like curls and limbering. You can also tie a towel around a gallon of water, turn it over, and hold it tightly. It’s a good option if you don’t own any dumbbells.

There’s also an area of carpal tunnel ergonomics that tries to figure out how to alleviate shoulder pain. Sometimes the ache from carpal tunnel syndrome can reach up to the upper back and arms.

Now, try this exercise: stretch out your arms straight with your thumbs down. Start leaning forward a little and lift your pinkies up high and far back. Keep this position for a count of five, and relax several times.
